Eclipse of the Century
There is a date already fixed on the calendar. On August 2, 2027, the moon will cover the sun for six minutes and twenty-three seconds near Luxor, Egypt. Nothing on land will see a longer totality until the year 2114.
My father-in-law spent years chasing eclipses. He worked at the Paris Observatory, and eclipse chasing was simply part of the job. You went where the sky told you to go. In 2009 he flew to China for what was, at the time, the longest total eclipse of the century, six minutes and thirty-nine seconds, a record that will stand until 2132. He got there. The path was right. The timing was right. It was cloudy.
That is the whole risk of an eclipse. You can calculate the moment down to the second, and still lose it to a cloud.
2027 is different. The path runs through North Africa in August, over some of the most reliably clear skies on the planet, across the Nile Valley and its temples. Egypt already knows how to host the world. The pyramids, the Valley of the Kings, the Nile itself have been receiving travelers for four thousand years. An eclipse chaser wants clear skies. Egypt’s deserts rarely disappoint.
This is one of three total solar eclipses crossing the globe in just over two years. Iceland and Spain on August 12, 2026, Egypt in 2027, Australia in 2028. That clustering is rare. The next time three align this closely won’t be until the mid-2040s.
I’ll be in Egypt myself this September, sailing the Nile by Dahabiya and cruise, well before the eclipse comes. Standing in that same stretch of river, a year out from the biggest sky event of the century, is its own kind of preview.
