The Name on the Shirt
The most famous teenager on earth is named after two debts.
In 2007, in a town on the edge of Barcelona, a baby was born to teenagers. His mother was sixteen. His father was not much older. There was no money.
Two friends helped. Not with advice. With rent, with food, with the things that keep a young family standing. One was called Lamine. The other was called Yamal.
The parents could not repay them. So they gave their son both names.
He could play under his surnames, Nasraoui from his father’s Morocco, Ebana from his mother’s Equatorial Guinea. Most Spanish players do. Instead the back of his shirt carries the gift itself.
Last year he signed a contract with a one billion euro release clause. The largest number ever written into football. And still, every time he scores, two men nobody has ever identified are thanked in front of a hundred million people.
In Arabic, Lamine means trustworthy. Yamal means grace. His parents chose neither meaning. They chose two neighbours who showed up.
Which is its own kind of grace.
